Biography:
Charles was born in Brooklyn, NY and moved east to Wading River, Long Island
in 1968. He started painting in his teens receiving his first formal instruction
at sixteen. After graduation from high school, he followed in his family's
footsteps and went to sea. After a shipboard accident he was unable to pursue
his chosen occupation. He went onto train in lettering and sign painting and
worked in the field for ten years doing pictorial work as well as lettering.
He continued painting in oil and watercolor. He returned to the maritime industry
and worked on tugboats and coastal tankers and held a masters and a pilots
license. After his retirement, he began painting full time. He received instruction
from his long-time friend, Tom Nicholas, N.A. and noted marine painter Marshall
W. Joyce. Both men have had a positive influence on his work. He is an artist
member of the North Shore Arts Association, Gloucester, MA; Academic Artists
Association, Springfield, MA; and the Hudson Valley Arts Association. He has
won awards in the juried exhibitions of these associations in addition to
The American Artists Professional League, Mystic Maritime Gallery, Mystic,
CT, and the Northeast Watercolor Society. He became and artist member of the
American Society of Marine Artists in 1999 (ASMA).
