American Impressionist John Terelak
discusses the technique of glazing to
add luminosity to oil paintings.

How does it work?

The concept behind Tithing Our Talents is simply to use our natural gifts - the talents we love and take pleasure in - to raise money for those causes we believe in. In the example given on this site - the North Shore Arts Association of Gloucester, Massachusetts event - the project had several components:

1. Professional artists, all members of the NSAA, who are very well recognized in their fields, volunteered to teach a workshop, do a demonstration, give a professional critique, or come to the event for a few hours and offer individual instruction.

2. The NSAA volunteered their spacious facility including a large parking lot and magnificent harbor views for the workshops to take place.

3. Aspiring artists from all over New England - and some from as far away as Florida - paid a daily or weekly fee to attend the workshops and demonstrations and avail themselves of the instruction being offered.

4. The professional artists offered their demonstration paintings for sale at a gallery exhibition at the end of the week.

5. Artists attending the event also had the option to offer their paintings for sale.

6. On the Friday of the event week all the paintings being offered were hung on the association walls and the public was invited to attend and bid via a silent auction for the available paintings.

All proceeds - from the class fees to the painting sales - were collected for Wellspring, as well as for several other charities of the artists' choices.

Additional proceeds will be generated in the Spring of 2004 when State of the Art Gallery of Rocky Neck Art Colony, Gloucester plans to hold a special two week exhibition of the paintings that were not sold or incomplete when the event was over.

All told the event raised over $13,000 for Wellspring House as well as an additional $3,000 for other organizations.

The function of art is to deepen our communion with the universe. Art isn't a profession but a priesthood." - Goethe
